Best and Worst Webquests
Which two of example WebQuests listed below are the best ones? Why?
The Underground Railroads and The Grow School Greens websites were the best in our opinion. They had the best information and were easy to follow.
Which two are the worst? Why?
We thought that the Ancient Egypt Webquest and the We all scream for Ice Cream were the worst. The information was not clear enough and there wasn't enough of it to help the the students learn anything.
What do best and worst mean to you?
Best to us meant the ones that had the most productive information and that was thorough in presenting it to the children. Worst meant that the information was not clear and not enough there to help the students get anything out of the page.

Blogging
1. What do you like or dislike about keeping a blog for this course?
I think keeping a blog for this class is a creative and fun way of posting assignments, although blogging really just isn't my thing.
2. How can keeping a blog make you a more effective teacher?
It is using new ideas and getting the students involved with technology for media literacy.
3. Will you consider continuing to post to your blog after this course is over? Why? Probably not, only because I post for assignments and once class is over I won't really need to anymore, although I do think that one day once I become a teacher that it could be something I could use in the classroom.
4. Keeping a blog helps you develop four new media literacies:
-Give me a concrete example of how blogging in this class is evidence of your abilities to do one of these four new media literacies:
I feel that one of the big things that we could use in our blogging is Collective Intelligence, the ability to share knowledge and compare notes with each other toward a common goal. I think that sometimes if there is an assignment that is posted and one person is not sure how to do it, if another person has already posted their assignment it could be a big help and they can get an idea on what to do from that. Therefore we are sharing notes with one another and both are trying to reach that common goal of completing an assignment.

Wikipedia Assignment
a. What is Wikipedia? Wikipedia is a multilingual, web-based, free-content encyclopedia project based on an openly editable model.
b. How would you answer the question posed in this piece “How reliable can a source be when anyone can edit it?”? Based on the video that we watched the other day during class, it proves that they keep an eye on who is editing their site and if it is an unknown address it is quickly looked at to be sure it is reliable.
c. Who do the creators of Wikipedia place their trust in when it comes to weeding out misinformation? The individual Wikipedia editors are the ones that are in charge of this and the individuals that view the site regularly.
d. Why did founder Larry Sanger leave Wikipedia? Basically because he wanted it to be more professionally input based.
e. What would abuse or vandalism look like on a Wikipedia page? It would be in the form of inaccuraate or falsified/misleading information that was intentionally put on the site by an individual.
f. What do the statistics quoted in the third paragraph of this piece reveal? That Wikipedia is a very popular website for users that need information.
g. Why do you think Wikipedia is so successful? Because people use it all the time to find answers to specific topics, and wikipedia has nearly any and every topic on it.
h. Why might Wikipedia’s creators not want to accept advertising?
Because it could very easily distract from the page itself and the users may start going off their website onto other sites from these advertisements, plus they are a pain to deal with honestly.
i. How does Wikiscanner help increase the reliability of Wikipedia entries?
It decreases abuse because it checks the editors info to see if that person or group is reliable in facts and if they are unbiased in their view/talking points.

Website Evaluation
I chose the Dog Island Free Forever Website. (http://www.thedogisland.com/)

- The website gives a list of people who work at the island, but there is not specifically a person listed as the author of the site itself.

- It tries to make it look like the owners are very large animal lovers and that they will take good care of the animals. Although, nowhere on the page did I see a location given.

- The site looks to have been created in 2003, this is when it was copyrighted.

-The website is just a .com website which means anyone could have created it and it could or could not be reliable.
* I don't think that this site is very valid, it has its reasons that I might believe some of it because of the press that they have been given, and the articles written on it but in the HOW section of the questions it says when in doubt, doubt and I really am not sure about it so I am doubting.

Question 4 and 5 Statistical Answers
5. This chart is a graph of grade 11, all levels 1 and 2 reading scores. The scores are pretty low actually but the Low SES students of level or series 1 have the highest grades. Many of the grades are right around the same percentage of about 25%-35% but there are some that are very scattered.

My Voki! (:
I believe that integrating technology into the classroom is very important. If children can't use technology they are going to be over taken by the world. Technology is becoming important to society and is a big part of it now. I believe that students should be able to use things on the computers and the internet that will help better themselves and their learning. A child is capable of whatever they set their mind to and if they do not have everything they need to do it then they are only being cut short of their own capabilities.

Educational Leadership
“Yet more and more students spend more and more time online. Rather than ignoring this fact of life, educators and education policymakers should embrace it. From video games to social networks, incorporating what students are doing online into the school curriculum holds great, and perhaps the only, promise for keeping students engaged in learning.”

http://youtu.be/4V9dPSyHets
This section of the article really struck me. I absolutely agree with what it is saying. I feel that the more internet and technology based things are, the better off a teacher would be as to getting their students to learn. Kids now days thrive on the little things that have to do with technology. Imagine if video games had something to do with school work, yet were fun at the same time, kids would learn things like crazy and enjoy it at the same time. Technology is taking over and textbooks within the next fifteen year in my opinion probably won’t even be around because digital media and the internet will soon take over them.

What questions do the caption and article title raise in your mind?
Without knowing what the article really is about it makes me wonder what claims are being seized. In the photo though it makes me think that the President is quite confident and ready to take control. They look like they're on a mission.

What questions do the caption and article title raise in your mind?
It makes me wonder if this crisis is going to actually ruin Obama. The picture makes it seem like he is worried and trying to come up with a solution to fix the oil spill. It is much more serious than the other picture where that one looked laid back and they meant business where this one he is alone and thinking hard.

Digital Story and ISTE NETS-T
The Digital Story Project:
A short, personal multimedia tale told from the heart. These stories can be created by people everywhere, on any subject, and shared electronically all over the world. Digital stories when viewed together, tell the bigger story of our time, the story that defines who we are.
ISTE NETS-T:
As foundational technology skills penetrate throughout our society, students will be expected to apply the basics in authentic, integrated ways to solve problems, complete projects, and creatively extend their abilities. ISTE's NETS for Students (2007) help students prepare to work, live, and contribute to the social and civic fabric of their communities.
The new standards identify several higher-order thinking skills and digital citizenship as critical for students to learn effectively for a lifetime and live productively in our emerging global society. These areas include the ability to:
•Demonstrate creativity and innovation
•Communicate and collaborate
•Conduct research and use information
•Think critically, solve problems, and make decisions
•Use technology effectively and productively
Make connections between the two.
Explain how they might promote learning in your future classroom.
Find a lesson plan, activity or idea that involves digital story telling in your content area and describe the activity or idea.

Old people can't text?
This was funny to us because it is showing that digital media is growing and that it is so stereotyped that old people cannot text. Most older people don't want to even try but in our comic this guy is giving it a shot and he's proud of himself for learning how to do it.

The VARK Questionnaire Results
My scores were: Visual: 6
Aural: 7
Read/Write: 7
Kinesthetic: 9
I have a multimodal (VARK) learning preference. This means that I can learn from several different modes, not just one certain one. I do not have a preference of Visual, Aural, Reading, or Kinesthetic according to this learning style test. My stronger preference is Kinesthetic but reading, writing, aural, and visual all are nearly even. I found it quite funny though that in a paragraph that I was reading about multimodal learning styles it stated that people who are multimodal learners often can easily adapt to the people they are working with, but several people have admitted that if they dont like the person they are working with the stay in a different mode just to get on their nerves. I can say that I have never intentionally done this, or that I remember at least, but I could see myself doing it because I am capable of it. Because of this, I really feel that this test is fairly accurate.

What are Wordle and Poll Everywhere?
Wordle is a website that can generate world or tag clouds. Usually used with single words that describe something or can be used with results of things. For example, in this class we used wordle to describe the kind of teacher that we wanted to be and to show the results of the polls that we made from Poll Everywhere. Poll Everywhere is a site that allows you to create a poll based on any question that you want and you can post it for others to see. Others can then respond from the computer or they can respond by a text message or text response. In this class we had to come up with a poll to help us get to know our classmates, I personally asked in my poll what year in college everyone was so that I could get an idea of what the majority of the students were.
If I taught a lesson using these two websites I would use them at the beginning of the year, just as we did. I think that they are great tools to use in the classrooms and help get the children involved. It lets them feel like they can have fun while still learning about things. It can also help some students who may not know anything about computers. I think that the best things to use these for are to help students get to know others in the class though. Not individually, but more so as a whole because it is an anonymous posting and kids are more likely to say what they what if nobody knows that it was really them who said it. It is a fairly easy assignment and they would enjoy it, especially because it is very hands on and most students now days need to be involved that way. I think that by using these tools or websites that it would have to go along with some of the ISTE standards like introducing the students. It is also getting them involved and engaging them in learning about the internet and computers.

Educational Leadership
"One inventive control technique is pretending to talk on your mobile phone when you see an acquaintance approaching—even someone you like— to avoid conversation. In my studies, 13 percent of U.S. students reported engaging in this behavior at least once a month. And 25 percent reported that they fiddled with text-based functions on their phones (such as checking old messages) to evade conversation with people they knew." When I read this quote I found it somewhat funny. I know that I have actually found myself in this position several times, especially walking across campus at the college. It's easy to see someone and decide that you are in a hurry so you just pick up the phone or act like your texting or on the phone and just wave
so you can keep on walking. Many times there is someone that you dont like also so staring into your phone and pretending that you dont see them is also fairly common. Its really ashame that it has to be that way but it happens quite often, and if your really paying attention you can easily notice it all over the place.

Time To Upgrade
In the article about digitally upgrading education one quote or statement that really stood out to me was that "Ms. Davidson herself was appalled not long ago when her students at Duke, who produced witty and incisive blogs for their peers, turned in disgraceful, unpublishable term papers.". I would strongly have to agree with this statement, I think that students posting blogs on the internet is something that they like doing because it is digital and they can relate to it more. I can easily see that students would have better blogs than term papers. Writing a paper, for me at least, puts pressure on the students because it is for so much of their grade that many times it becomes overly stressful trying to make it the best and the writing isn't near as good as if they were just writing a fun blog online.
This short video clip is just some proof that education is becoming more digital and the need for things like blogging is important.

Hi (:
My name is Taylor Myers and I am a Junior at Fairmont State. I am in the Elementary Education Program and plan on teaching anywhere between K through 3rd grades. Children learn in all different ways but I believe that most children do better when working with hands on activities. I think that if they have to listen to the teacher talk all the time and they never get to be involved that they will not learn as well and become bored. If they have the chance to work with things themselves instead of just listening they will more than likely understand it better. For example if I was teaching a class about how to paint a picture, I am not just going to talk about it I am going to give the children paper and paint and let them try it on their own.
